Memorial Day is set aside to remember those whose service to our country has given and preserved our American freedoms.
As I look at my family tree, I’m grateful for the sacrifices made by my ancestors from many lands who embraced the flag and lifestyle of their adopted country, pledging their allegiance in loyalty, and the last true measure of devotion, if necessary.
I’d like to know: Do you have a special way of showing your relatives’ military service in your family tree?

Put as many stories out there as you can to be remembered.

Great idea. My father was in the Navy, one of his brothers in the Marines and the other in the Army Air Corps. Only one left is the Marine veteran. So glad he has shared photos and let us look at his flight book. Stories are harder to get at, though. I’m hoping he will start to reminisce in future conversations. Because so many records were lost to fire, I don’t know if I’ll be able to discover much about my dad’s service record. In the meantime, I’ll record the information as I remember hearing it.

Good plan, but National Archives informed me that no Marine records were lost to the 1973 St. Louis fire, I recommend trying to get them again. Look forward to reading your stories.

Looking forward to Veterans Day. I’ve asked my uncle some questions about his service memories, but at 93, many are fading. I’ve also asked him to do the Ancestry.com DNA test and am hoping to find some good cousin matches from my dad’s side of the family.
